Park Avenue Lighting Situation
If you have ever walked down the section of Park Avenue between the High Road and St Pauls Avenue, and you are a woman, you will know just how badly lit and scary it is to walk alone.
For the past few months I have been asking Brent Council to either improve the street lighting or cut the trees back so that the existing lights can shine through. They assured me that there was nothing wrong with them and that maintenance would be carried out.
The reason I was so concerned about this, besides myself and my friends safety, is because my sister works nights until about 12-1am and she has no other choice but to walk down this street at night. She chooses to walk down the middle of the street, where at least you can vaguely see, rather than amongst the shadows on the walkway where anyone could be lurking.
Well, last night the inevitable happened. She was followed by a man in a car, who was quite persistent in his attention. She was lucky that she had enough guts to run, but what about other women who aren’t so lucky? Every time someone walks down that street at night by themselves, they are taking their life in their hands… and what do Brent Council have to say knowing this? “The lights in Park Avenue are of the required standard in terms of light output” I totally disagree!
Does this sort of thing have to happen to some other poor girl who may not be as lucky as my sister before the council listen to us? I’m tempted to get up on a ladder and prune the damn trees myself!

I too live on St Pauls Avenue in Willesden Green, and I too work nights and have no other choice but to walk down this badly lit, terrible section of road! So far I have been fortunate enough to have never been followed, but the senario is never far from my mind.
Something must be done! Has the council lighting inspectors ever been to assess the situation at night-time? For surely if they had, then they must realise that the lighting is not adequate, but it only sets the scene for an easy attack on a woman, which I am surprised hasn't happened yet!

I know the area well, having lived in Willesden for the past three
years! I have to completely agree with the comments being made on "Bad
street lighting on St Paul's Avenue". Surely the Brent Council can come
and assess the situation at some point in darkness and make amends to
what ever degree is necessary, after all isn't that one of the reason we
pay council tax ?? I find it totally unacceptable that we pay our taxes
and bills to find that nothing is put back into the "user pays system".
I am rather concerned that this incident happened in summer - what is
the road going to be like in the middle of winter when we have many more
hours of darkness. I plead that someone in Brent Council be gutsy
enough to take this matter into their own hands, do what they are payed
to do, and do what is obviously necessary, that being, make the street
brighter in order to deter any SICKO's from their act of play.

Lighting in Willesden Green/Dollis Hill
In regards to L Stewards letter aswell, I live in Dollis Hill on near Gladstone Park. On several occasions I have felt very unsafe walkinghome from the tube station with the dim lights in this area. Actually it doesnt matter what time of the day or night that it is. We pay all this money for council tax yet nothing is being done about crime in our borough. What is happening with all this money????? The politicians promise all this stuff to happen and it doesnt. Dont you think that this has gone on long enough and something should happen. How many people need to be attached before something happens? Isnt it all about preventing these things happening? We are adults and can probably defend ourselves what about young children and teenagers? When does it stop.

Bryan Avenue pitch dark
Parts of Bryan Avenue are pitch dark at night. Even walking a dog I have to cross from side to side to try and find more light.

Bad lighting
In response to Ms Stewrds letter I would totally have to agree that the lighting in Park Ave and surrounding streets is appalling. How many more people need to be followed or scared as they are forced to walk home in the dark before something is done. I mean how hard could it be to prune a few trees? Surley peoples safety should come first.

St Pauls Avenue lighting
St Pauls Avenue is a street used by a large percentage of people that walk from the tube through Willesden as their path home and as Ms Steward has strongly pointed out the lighting of this street is appalling.
With winter closing in and more hours of darkness in a day this surely would be a concern to everyone.
Do we have to wait for a tragedy of a rape or assault to occur before Brent Council will do something about it??

Poor Lighting on Park Avenue
In regard to L Stewards letter I must fully agree, as a resident on Chapter Road, just down from the roundabout I am continually finding myself in a similiar situation, walking in darkness down Park Avenue. I urge that something please be done so that we do not have to feel so unsafe walking near our homes. It would be a terrible shame if our pleas were not listened to until something terrible was to happen.
