Human form of rabbit plague - fear

If the rabbit disease myxamatosis were to mutate to a human form, it could virtually wipe out the population of Britain, it is thought. There is speculation here that rabbits might deliberately try to contaminate human food and drink, as a result of a previously unknown group defence instinct.

That's frightening. I have always wondered what would happen if , G-d forbid, apple tree leaf curl transferred to humans. Now with the bird flu thing going on my husband may not be quite so dismissive this summer to see me sitting in my garden beneath my fruit trees wearing a surgical mask.

Can nobody stop these horror films of spacemen hurling birds into sacks around the world? These birds have the flu, they need bedrest and LemSip, not to be gassed. Ok, maybe that's not practical, but surely we can do better than this. For example, abolish livestock farming.

What am I saying, they don't even have the bird flu, those are healthy birds they're slamming together into sacks... All pretence of scruple goes out the window as soon as people think they might be at risk. Forget humane treatment of animals, forget the nine o'clock watershed for kids, forget what the hell you think you're doing - just go wild.

Bird flu, encephalitis, rabbit plague, I refuse to get sucked into the culture of fear. I can only live my life and be informed the best I can, but I am not to fill my life with more media filter fear. I spend money anyway, so they don't need to convert me.
